  3.                 Chapter 10, The Good Shepherd.
  4.  
  5. Chapter 10 is a continuation of chapter 7, 8 and 9.
  6. In verse 1 the "you" is the Pharisees of John 9:39-41.
  7.  
  8.  
  9. 1.   Jesus is the Good Shepherd.  Ps. 23:1 - "The Lord is my
  10.      Shepherd." Therefore He claimed to be the Lord (Jehovah).  He
  11.      is Deity.  "I am come that they might have life and that they
  12.      might have it more abundantly." (v. 10b).  He gives His life
  13.      for the sheep.  v. 11.  Note also v. 14, 15, 16, 17, and 28
  14.      concerning the Shepherd.

  16. 2.   The Father of the Good Shepherd. v. 15, 17, 18.
  17.      The Father gave the sheep to the good Shepherd.  The Father is
  18.      greater than all.  The Shepherd and His Father are one.  No
  19.      one is able to pluck the sheep out of the Father's hand.

  21. 3.   The Sheep.  Called by name, led out.  They follow the
  22.      Shepherd, know and hear His voice.  They receive eternal life
  23.      and shall never perish.  None shall pluck them out of the
  24.      Shepherd's hand nor out of the Father's hand.
  25.  
  26. 4.   The Other Sheep.  Not of this fold.  They must be brought.
  27.      v.16. They shall hear His voice.  Cf. Acts 28:28--"The
  28.      salvation of God is sent unto the Gentiles and..they will hear
  29.      it."
  30.      There shall be One Shepherd and one fold--the unity of the
  31.      body of Christ.

  33. 5.   The Sheepfold.  One.  Cf.John 17:11, 21-23, Eph. 4:4-6.

  35. 6.   The Door of the Sheepfold. v.7, 9. Jesus.  His body and blood
  36.      bring salvation to us and protect us.  By Him if any man enter
  37.      in he shall be saved and shall go in and out and find pasture.
  38.  
  39. 7.   The Porter. v. 3. The Holy Spirit.
  40.  
  41. 8.   The Stranger.  The sheep will not follow a stranger but flee
  42.      from him.  They do not know the voice of strangers.
  43.  
  44. 9.   Hireling, Seeth the wolf come, leaveth the sheep and fleeth.
  45.      He cares not for the sheep.  Note the hireling leaders of
  46.      Israel in Christ's day and also today.
  47.  
  48. 10.  A Thief and a Robber. v. 1, 8, 10.  They are the Pharisees
  49.      of John 9:39-41 and others of similar nature.  The thief comes
  50.      to steal, to kill, and to destroy.
  51.  
  52. 11.  The Wolf.  Satan.  He comes, catches the sheep, and scatters
  53.      them.
  54.      Note Matt.7:15, Acts 20:29, 2 Pet.2:1.

  56.      This parable has a threefold aspect, i.e.
  57.           (1) the Fold. v.1-10,
  58.           (2) The Shepherd. v.11-18, and
  59.           (3) the Sheep.v.26-30.
  60.  
  61.      Note the two divisions in this chapter:
  62.      1.   v. 1-21, spoken at the Feast of Tabernacles in the 7th
  63.           month.
  64.      2.   v. 22-42, spoken at the Feast of Dedication in the 9th
  65.           month,at which time there was the joyful illumination of
  66.           every house.  It is also called the feast of lights.
  67.  
  68.      In  these  discourses  Jesus  declares   His   absolute Deity.
  69.      Note v.30 -
  70.  
  71.      " I  and My  Father  are  one."  v.36 - "I  am  the  Son of
  72.      God,"
  73.  
  74.
